Dr Suarez MD PhD is a Medical Oncology consultant at Vall d´Hebron University Hospital and Vall d´Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO). She is part of the Genitourinary, Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors, Sarcoma and Cancer of Unknown Primary Site Group, with special focus on kidney and bladder cancer.
She has been principal investigator and co-investigator in more than 300 clinical trials throughout her career, mainly in the genitourinary area. Research highlights include clinical development of immunotherapy in her area of knowledge. Dr Suarez has played an active role in the most relevant studies that led to the approval of the current therapies for renal cell carcinoma.
One of her main areas of interest is biomarkers, she is involved in several biomarker studies and has been a co-author of some of them such as the IMMOTION 151. Another relevant highlight includes the CALYPSO trial, which focuses on molecular alteration selection in patients leads to a better outcome in renal papillary tumors.
Dr Suarez has also participated in several investigator-initiated studies and has been recipient of competitive grants from different funding entities. In addition, she is involved in several steering committees of relevant trials. In fact, the result of this research has been highly productive, leading to a number of publications in high-impact journals, among which stands out publications in The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Nature Medicine or Journal Clinical Oncology. She has authored and co-authored more than 250 articles, communications, and book chapters at a national and international level.
Reflective of her expertise within the genitourinary cancer field, Dr Suarez has served as a member and track leader of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) Scientific Program Committee, European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Scientific Program Committee and Chair of the International Kidney Cancer Symposium Europe (IKCSEU).
Dr Suarez has been involved in elaboration of the ESMO Guidelines since 2019, EAU (European Association of Urology) Guidelines since 2024 and SEOM (Sociedad Española de Oncología) guidelines.
